Caffettiera Caffé Bar, Montréal
An Italian owner calls on the spirit of his country, with coffee, football and '90s nostalgia giving Caffettiera Montréal its unique essence...
Located in Montréal‘s thronging Golden Square Mile, amidst its Victorian-era architecture and casual eateries, Caffettiera is a stand-up espresso bar oozing ’90s nostalgia, a vibrant colour palette and relaxed ambience. Bringing Italian culture to Canada, here one can quickly sup a shot of espresso at the counter or lounge on tan leather banquettes for a catch up with friends over something stronger and a bite to eat.
Caffettiera Caffé Bar was put together by locally-based architecture and design studio, Ménard Dworkind, who really went to town on the design details, having fun with curves, colour, pattern and materials; the Montréal café exuding a fun and friendly ambience encouraging social interaction and a discovery of the Italian way of life. Inspired by the 1990s and owner Andreas’s fond memories of “a better Italy” throughout that decade (including them having the world’s best football team), evocative interiors include an array of vintage books, stickers, toys, and a nod to a celebrity or two through art and photographs; most notably the great Roberto Baggio, who watches over the space as a sporting deity.
A black monolithic terrazzo bar highlights a series of sandwich, pastry and retail displays, whilst behind, silver coffee machines are constantly churning out cups of coffee for eager caffeine consumers. The checkerboard mosaic floor contrasts against the colourful table tops and stand-up bar, with walls covered in faux-wood plastic laminate panels continuing to pile on the nostalgic theme. Curved mirrors add a sense of spaciousness in the 745 square foot café, as does the natural light that floods in through the front entrance. Pendant lights fabricated by Lambert & Fils, using yellow telephone wire, continue to push the 1990s theme to its limits, while the use of lush greenery and high ceilings give the space a more contemporary feel.
Bringing Italian café culture and nostalgia to the heart of Montréal, Caffettiera Caffé Bar is a fun and inviting local with much to offer its surrounding community. Due to the current climate, tables and the terrace have been temporarily closed, however customers are invited to order coffee, colazione and sandwiches to take away. Wherever you are, let’s continue to support small independent businesses whenever we can.
