Carlos Barrios is a talented artist who was born and raised in El Salvador. As a child, Carlos frequently visited ancient places such as pyramids and temples with his archaeologist father and very early on developed a deep love of art. Throughout his life Carlos has been discovering and exploring reality, fantasy and imagination through art.
Studio Equator were commissioned to design an art catalogue to showcase Carlos' latest works for his upcoming exhibition, Fiesta - a rich abundant festive celebration in honour of painting and life.
Our concept for the catalogue cover was based on the El Salvadorian Day of the Dead festival, a time of celebration of the lives of friends and family who have died. This concept is a reflection of the concept and themes of the artwork
The cover is die cut in the shape of a skull and embellished with foil scrollwork and illustrations. The die cut allows Carlos's artwork from the title page to show through to the cover, and is to scale to enable it to double as a festival mask.
